Step 2 - How to scan the handwriting sample

1) Create (or obtain) a handwriting sample, following the previous instructions as best as possible. Do not use a piece of paper larger than US Letter Size (8.5 x 11 inches) or A4 (210 x 296mm / 8.25 x 11.75 inches).

2) Set up your scanner and scanning software in preparation for the scan:-

  • If there is a choice of image type which the scanned image may be saved as, try and save as a .GIF image.
  • Select a scanning resolution of 300 dpi (dots per inch). This is very important - setting the resolution too low or too high will not provide a satisfactory image.
  • Try to use the default settings for light intensity and contrast.
  • Scan the handwriting sample and save it, preferably using some of your name in the filename.
  • You may save the image as a colour image. Please do not attempt to reduce the colour depth as this may impair the quality.

3) If you were unable to save the sample as a .GIF format image, you must convert the image to the .GIF format. If your scanner software will not let you convert the image, use a dedicated graphics program (such as Paint Shop Pro) to load your image and SAVE AS a .GIF format image. You MUST convert the image to .GIF format as this will produce a small file size suitable for transmission over the internet. Do not use .JPG as this does not provide good results.

4) Check the size of the image file (not the size of the image in pixels) by viewing the file details on your computer. Some graphics programs allow you to view the file size, but you may need to look at your file using Windows Explorer, File Manager or similar. The file should be no greater than 700 KB. If the image file is larger than 700 KB then you have probably made an error. Re-scan the sample, checking that the scanning resolution is 300 dpi.

5) Once you have successfully scanned the handwriting at a resolution of 300 dpi and produced a file no greater than 700 KB you can proceed with submitting the sample for analysis.

IMPORTANT:
If you cannot obtain the correct file size, PLEASE DO NOT SEND A LARGER FILE SIZE to see whether we will accept it.
Do not send multiple versions of the sample at different qualities and file sizes.
Do not make multiple submissions of the same image.

If you have any problems with scanning your handwriting sample, please go to the instructions for sending the sample as a HARD COPY in the POST
