Our Meeting And Engagement

Diary Of Events

Here is a brief outline of the events, from our meeting on IRC, up to the start of the wedding plans:-


Sat May 25th
Andy is chatting on channel #30something on IRC and responds to chickweed's request for an on-line interview about Internet relationships. chickweed invites Andy onto #brighton. On #brighton Andy meets Lisa's friend Lee (known as ^Lissy^ on IRC). Andy chats with ^Starr (Lisa) very briefly.
Sun May 26th
Andy talks to Lee again, but she is busy and asks her friend ^Starr (Lisa) if she wants to chat with him. Lisa contacts Andy privately (DCC chat) and introduces herself.
Sun June 2nd
After a week of chatting (and getting on extremely well), Andy asks Lisa if he can buy her a plane ticket so she can come over to England ASAP. Lisa eventually accepts.
Thur June 6th
Lisa boards a plane in Florida.
Fri June 7th
Lisa and Andy meet for the first time. They spend a week together and know that they are right for each other.
Thur June 13th
Lisa flies home.
During the next month Andy and Lisa keep in contact over the Internet on IRC and by e-mail (and the telephone!).
Sat July 13th
Lisa returns to England.
Sat July 27th
Andy proposes to Lisa.
Mon July 29th onwards
Andy and Lisa send out e-mail announcements to all of their Internet friends around the world, and also start preparing 'snail mail' announcements (designed on the computer) for all those friends and family unfortunate enough not to be on the Internet.

A virtual guest book is set up on their World Wide Web page so that friends and well-wishers can send their congratulations.


Wed July 31st
Andy and Lisa visit the local newspaper (Wellington Weekly News) and tell them about their story. They also write to the local cyber cafe to ask if they would like to be involved with the planned virtual wedding and reception.

The World Wide Web guest book continues to grow with best wishes, including some famous ones!


Fri August 2nd
Andy and Lisa meet the manager of the cyber cafe (Taunton Cyber) to discuss plans. The cyber cafe offers it's services and facilities for the cyber wedding and reception.
Sun August 4th
Andy and Lisa fill in a form on an on-line magazine called the Cyberspace Social to announce their engagement. The editor of the magazine writes back and offers his services as an IRC minister.
Mon August 5th
Local TV (West Country News) and several independent journalists contact the couple about potential stories.
Tue August 6th
The day starts with Andy and Lisa finding themselves as the main headline of the local paper The Wellington Weekly News.
West Country News and BBC News West both film Andy and Lisa at home and at the Registry Office, and show the items that evening. The phone doesn't stop ringing. A photographer from another local newspaper (The Somerset County Gazette) takes some pictures. Andy does a telephone interview for a local radio station (Orchard FM), which is broadcast at 1.00pm that day. Orchard FM .WAV file. (468,240 bytes, 42.47 secs, mono, 8 bit, 11,025 Hz)
Andy and Lisa make a date for the wedding!! November 1st 1996 at 3.30pm GMT.
Wed August 7th
Another photographer (national press) takes a series of photographs of Andy and Lisa at home.
Thur August 8th
The story appears on page 3 of the Western Daily Press newspaper. A Church Of England vicar from Hampshire contacts the couple and offers his services for the cyber-wedding.
Fri August 9th
The story appears in two national papers - The Daily Mail, and The Daily Mirror. There is also an item on the front page of the local Somerset County Gazette.
Sat August 10th
Andy and Lisa appear on live Talk Radio which is being presented from the Edinburgh Festival.
Sun August 11th
A very small article appears in The Sunday Independent newspaper (national paper).
Thur August 22nd
Andy and Lisa appear live (by phone) on 'Northwest Afternoon' - a TV program broadcast from Seattle, Washington. (KOMO TV - an ABC affiliate). They tell their story about how they met, and Mike Bugal, the virtual minister from Seattle, is on the show as well.
