Premium 'Ultra' Handwriting Font Service Instructions

These instructions are for both TrueType and Single Line handwriting fonts (Versions 5 and 6).

Which Version Should I Choose?

If you're yet to purchase a Premium 'Ultra' font, please see our Differences Between Premium Ultra Font Versions page (opens in a new window) which explains about the different versions and helps you decide which version to choose.

Here are the steps for creating your handwriting font:

1. Print out the forms
Go to this section

2. Complete the forms
Go to this section

3. Scan and upload, or mail the forms
Go to this section

4. Make your purchase (if you've not already done so)
Go to this section

It is strongly recommended that you follow these instructions in the sequence provided so as not to miss any of the required steps.

1. Print out the forms

To ensure the best results, please provide your handwriting samples on the forms provided.

The forms require a PDF reader to download. Most computers already have this software installed, but if you have any problems you can search for a free PDF reader online here.

The Premium 'Ultra' Service has 2 forms:

Form 1
(Revised Nov 2023)

This is the main form for providing all of your natural handwriting. You may print and use as many blank copies of the first form as you need. (We recommend printing at least 10 blank copies of the form for the required handwriting.).

Form 2 (Optional)

This is an optional form for providing 'error' characters. Only 1 copy is required if you wish to use error characters with the Scriptalizer™ software.

Please ensure that you set your printer to the highest quality possible for standard white printer paper.

The arrowed grey lines on Form 1, and the example handwriting on Form 2, should be visible but faint, so that we can separate your handwriting from the lines on the forms when we receive them. (See examples below).

Example of correct contrast on printed form
Correct contrast - light grey baseline visible, but not too dark.

Example of poor contrast on printed form - too light
Contrast too light - light grey baseline not visible.*

*The light grey baseline is a guide only. If you are unable to get the baseline to print you could still use the forms by either lightly drawing the lines in pencil and erasing them afterwards, or using a lined piece of paper underneath your form so the lines shows through to use as a guideline.

Example of poor contrast on printed form - too dark
Contrast too dark - light grey baseline almost black.

If you have any problems, or are unable to print out the forms, you have the following options:

If you have already purchased this service:
Upgrade your purchase to a retail font pack with pre-printed forms which will be mailed to you.

If you haven't paid for this service yet:
Click here to purchase a retail font pack.
When you make your purchase, please select 'Retail Font Pack' from the options given. You will then be sent these instructions and the pre-printed forms in the mail.

2. Complete the forms

How to Fill Out the Forms

Please do not write on the forms until you have read all of the instructions. You may wish to print this page out for reference as it will make it easier when you fill out the forms.

Complete the forms by writing your handwriting characters on the light grey arrowed lines on Form 1. (See further below for what to write).

Fill out the forms using a good quality pen. Black ink provides the best results.

Try to write as naturally as possible. However, do not 'scrawl' your handwriting. If your letters are too uneven, the handwriting font will not look natural.

Please ensure you copy out the words below exactly as they are given (e.g. use capitals and lower case letters as requested).

You do not have to fit a certain number of words on each line. Just space out the handwriting as you would normally write and we will replicate your word spacing in your font.

If you make a mistake on any of your forms, don't worry. Just cross out your error and re-write the word you messed up.

If you are scanning the forms, please retain the originals in the event that we have problems processing them.

Do not allow your handwriting to cross the solid lines on the form.

IMPORTANT: The letters you write must be darker than the baseline (See below).

Example of correct contrast between handwriting and baseline
Correct contrast between handwriting and baseline. (It doesn't matter if the baseline is lighter than the example, or if it does not show at all).
Example of poor contrast between handwriting and baseline
Poor contrast between handwriting and baseline. We would not be able to separate the handwriting from the baseline and would have to ask you to do the forms again.

Do not use pencil as it is likely to not provide enough contrast.

What to Write

Please write the page numbers and include the line numbers to help you, and us, check to make sure that everything has been provided.

Please write the following out on Form 1, using as many copies as you need:

Optional Characters

Write the following symbols if you have purchased, or intend to purchase, the 'Optional' character set:

¼ ½ ¾ ™ ¢ © ®

DOUBLE CHECK WHAT YOU HAVE WRITTEN! It is easy to miss out words, or even entire lines. Any missing words or characters may significantly delay the production of your font.

Form 2 (Optional - 'error' characters)

Example of Scriptalizer 'error'

Many of us experience a 'slip of the pen' when we write and have to cross out our mistake (or use correction fluid, or screw it up and start again!). Form 2 allows you to supply examples of how you cross or scribble out mistakes for words of different lengths. If you supply these 'error' characters, when you use the Scriptalizer™, you will have the option to ask the software to add 'mistakes' at a frequency you choose.

The Scriptalizer™ will take the next word when it is time to create a 'mistake', randomly change one letter, and then cross it out.

If you do not complete this form, we will generate a default 'error' character using one single line through the centre of the word to be crossed out.

To complete Form 2, choose the set of words that read 'a on the word taste' that are most similar in size to your normal handwriting, and cross or scribble each one out as if you had made an error.

Do not write out the words themselves - just make the crossing out stroke(s).

Ensure that the contrast between your crossing out strokes and the words 'a on the word taste' is similar to that required for Form 1.

If you make a real mistake on any of your forms, don't worry. Just cross out your error and re-write the word you messed up.

Additional Non-English Diacritic Characters (i.e. For a Language Pack)

If you wish to add additional non-English diacritic characters (e.g. Ä Ö Ü ä ö ü ß etc.) then please go to our Diacritic Characters page to find out what to supply for your language. (Opens in a new window)

Other Special Characters

If you require any other special characters not requested above, please write them on the form. We will send you an additional payment request for these characters after you have placed your order.

3. Scan and upload, or mail the forms

There are two methods to return the completed forms to us:

  • If you have a scanner you can scan your forms and e-mail them to us (quickest service). See below for full instructions.
  • If you don't have a scanner you can mail the completed forms to us at:

Quantum Enterprises,
4 The Old School House,
Lower Sea Lane,
Charmouth,
Dorset,
DT6 6LJ
United Kingdom

It is important to include your e-mail address on the forms to help us marry it up with your order.

How to Scan and upload the Forms

Set up your scanner and scanning software in preparation for the scan.

Place each completed form in the scanner as straight as possible.

Scan the image as a gif, jpg, tif or PDF file.

Select a scanning resolution of 300 dpi (dots per inch).

This is very important - setting the resolution too low or too high will not provide a satisfactory image. Font forms scanned at the correct resolution will be around 2,200 pixels or more wide, by 3,200 pixels or more high. If your form is smaller than this, you have not scanned it at the right resolution.

Use the default settings for light intensity and contrast.

Scan as a full colour image or 256 colour grey scale.

Do not scan in black and white only.

Scan the entire form.

Check the quality of the image. If you cannot produce an image with a clear contrast between the handwriting characters and light grey baseline or pre-printed characters on the form (see examples below), you will have to:

Upgrade your order for a set of pre-printed forms in a Retail Font Pack (if you think the forms you printed are too dark), or

Send the completed forms in the mail. (See above for mailing address).

Example of correct contrast between handwriting and baseline
Correct contrast between handwriting and baseline.
Example of poor contrast between handwriting and baseline
Poor contrast between handwriting and baseline. We would not be able to separate the handwriting from the baseline and would have to ask you to do the forms again.

Scan each form and save it as Form1 [Your Name] and Form2 [Your Name], etc.

It is important to include your name in the filename of the form and your e-mail address on the form itself to help us marry it up with your order.

Please retain your forms in case there are any problems with the scans and we ask you to re-scan and re-submit.

If you have already purchased this service, please click the 'Upload Forms' button below to upload your scanned forms.

If you have not yet purchased this service, please see below for purchase instructions.
